Laser Treatment for Acne Scars: Procedure, Cost

Laser Treatment for Acne Scars in Singapore

Lasers are one of the most common treatments for acne scars in Singapore.

It is important that you need to know your options. Before coming to see me, it’s not uncommon for patients to try ineffective methods such as skin care products.

Medical-grade lasers performed by doctors or board-certified dermatologist are the most effective ways to get rid of stubborn acne scars.

Laser treatment for acne scars is both science and art. -Dr Justin Boey

How Laser Treatment for Acne Scar Works?

Laser treatment for acne scar works by breaking down old scarred skin and encouraging new skin remodelling via increased collagen production.

Acne scars are permanent depressions or elevation on your skin. There are different type of acne scars such as Rolling/Atrophic Scars, Ice Pick Scars, Boxcar Scars, Post-inflammatory Erythema, Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, and Hypertrophic Scars.

Laser for Acne Scar Removal

Dr Boey discusses your options for acne scar removal using skin lasers.

At our medical centre, we offer a wide range of acne scar and skin lasers so that we can tackle various types of scars and skin conditions.

Fractional CO2 Laser is effective for treating most kinds of atrophic acne scars.

Fractional CO2 (carbon dioxide) Laser has a downtime of 2 – 5 days. It is one of the most common acne scar treatments in Singapore. Common brands of CO2 Lasers include Edge, eCO2, SmartXide, Mixto, Fraxel.

Fractional CO2 Laser is an ablative resurfacing treatment that pokes microscopic holes in the surface of the skin. The energy delivered into the skin stimulates collagen production to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Some patients find Fractional CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser more convenient than other laser treatments as it usually requires only one treatment session.

Fraxel Dual uses 2 different wavelengths to treat acne scars and post-acne spots.

Fraxel 1927nm wavelength treats the pigmentation spots in your skin while Fraxel 1550nm wavelength improves skin texture. Fraxel Dual is commonly found in clinics around Singapore. This laser treatment treats acne scars, wrinkles, collagen loss and other skin pigmentations caused by sun damage. Fraxel Dual is programmed to target the affected area directly. Unfortunately, this laser cannot help with hypertrophic scars or marks.

Pico laser is effective in treating shallow acne scars.

This is the latest non-ablative laser that is able to target acne scars with more precision and safety, resulting in shorter recovery time. Pico laser delivers ultra-short pulses of energy that shatters pigmented and damaged cells to make it easier for the body to flush out the shattered particles. The treatment is proven to be one of the safest laser treatments as it has the least damage to the surrounding tissues. Dr Boey is one of the first doctors in South-East Asia to offer the Pico Plus laser system from Korea.

Pulsed dye lasers

Pulsed dye lasers are useful in reducing the redness associated with acne marks/ post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation and have minimal downtime. The treatment uses a concentrated beam of light to target blood vessels in the skin. The light transmitted into the skin is converted into heat, which then destroys the blood vessels without damaging the surrounding area.

Radio frequency

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatments, such as the INFINI system use small micro-needles to deliver heat energy to the skin. This non ablative laser stimulates collagen production in skin cells, activates acne scar remodelling and strengthens your dermis layer.

RF microneedling is ideal for rolling, atrophic, mixed, and tethered scars. Unfortunately, this does not work for hypertrophic scars.

Healing time is quicker than lasers – often within 48 hours.

There’s also less chance of inflammation and hyperpigmentation with RF microneedling than fractional lasers. Results in scars improvement are expected up to 6 months post-treatment.

Dr Justin Boey is one of the highest volume users of this scars treatment system in the region.

How much does laser treatment for acne scars cost?

The average price range of laser treatment for acne scars cost in Singapore:

  • Mild to moderate acne scar laser treatment in Singapore costs: $1800 – $3500
  • Severe acne scar laser treatment in Singapore costs: $3500 – $7000

Risks and Side Effects

The risks and side effects of acne scar laser procedures are minimal if performed by an experienced doctor or dermatologist.

The common side-effects and down time for scars treatment include redness, peeling, inflammation and pigmentation. Rarely, certain patients might get a reactivation of cold sores.

FAQ

Yes, laser treatments are research proven to work for acne scars. Results are good especially when the treatment is performed by expert doctors or dermatologists. Dr Justin Boey performs thousands of acne scars laser procedures a year.

Based on peer reviewed research data on various types of laser treatments, it takes at least 5 sessions for significant improvement in appearance of your acne scars healing process. Some people may need more sessions to see results for their scars.

There is usually room for improvement after each treatment. This is why we recommend a series of treatments for best results.

Yes, laser is safe for your skin when your acne scarring treatment is performed by an expert doctor or dermatologist. A good skin doctor has to determine the correct laser energy to avoid side effect and stimulate significant amounts of collagen content in your scarring.

In fact, certain lasers used for acne scarring treatment do not just increase collagen content in your skin cells and skin tissue, they are even used to tackle skin cancer.

Most people also find the pain tolerable with the use of strong numbing creams.

We recommend a face to face consultation with Dr Boey at our medical centre for a comprehensive assessment and discussion about your skin and scars.

Before your treatment session, you should avoid sun tanning or being sun burnt at least 3 days before and after treatment. By minimizing sun exposure, you avoid worsening inflammation and pigmentation. This is especially important for people with darker skin types.

In terms of skin care routine, you should stop using products that contain glycolic acid, vitamin c and other forms of light therapy during your recovery process. Although these treatments may improve your active acne skin condition and skin tone, they remove and exfoliate the top layer of skin. This may make your skin tissue and dermis layer more sensitive and increase redness during acne scarring treatments. Your acne scars treatment downtime will also increase.

Treating acne scars and removing scar tissue is a specialized field. It is important for you to speak to doctors or dermatologists to find out more information before you undergo treatment.

After laser treatment for your acne scars, you can expect smoother skin and less visible scars after 1-2 months.

You might find that there is room for improvement after 1 treatment. This is why we recommend a series of treatments for best results.

In general, most people find that the pain, redness, downtime and investment are worth it for removing scars and marks.

We recommend that you seek treatment in a reputable clinic or medical centre that has a wide variety of lasers so that you achieve best results.
